Mobile app penetration testing in Saudi Arabia: secure the app, the device and the API behind it

We test iOS and Android apps on real devices: what they store, what they send, how they resist tampering and what the backend allows, against the OWASP MASVS.

  • Static, dynamic and runtime analysis
  • Storage, network and API testing together
  • Tamper and root-detection resilience checked

01Overview

What is mobile application penetration testing?

Mobile application penetration testing examines an iOS or Android app, the data it stores on the device, the traffic it sends and the APIs it talks to, to find weaknesses that could expose user data, enable fraud or let attackers tamper with the app.

Mobile apps carry sensitive logic and data onto devices you do not control. Attackers can unpack the app, inspect its storage, intercept its traffic and replay its API calls. Testing shows what they would find first.

We assess against the OWASP Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS), at the level that fits your risk.

02What we test

Six layers of a mobile app

Each layer has its own failure modes.

Inside the package

We unpack the app and review code, configuration and embedded secrets without running it.

  • Hard-coded keys and credentials
  • Insecure configuration and permissions
  • Third-party SDK review
  • Debug and test code left in

What you receive

A map of what an attacker learns from the file alone.

03How we work

From app package to verified fix

We start with the app and end with the backend.

  1. Step 1

    Scope

Platforms, builds, test accounts and the MASVS level required.

  2. Step 2

    Static

Unpack, review and extract secrets and configuration.

  3. Step 3

    Dynamic

Run on devices and manipulate behaviour.

  4. Step 4

    API

Test the services the app calls.

  5. Step 5

    Report

Findings mapped to MASVS with fixes.

  6. Step 6

    Retest

    Confirm remediation.

06Saudi Arabia and the GCC

Mobile security for the Saudi market

Banking, government and healthcare apps carry the highest expectations.

  • SAMA

    SAMA expectations

Banks and payment providers must protect mobile channels, with strong authentication and secure transaction signing.

  • Identity

    Government apps

Apps that integrate with national identity and services need careful testing of authentication flows.

  • Language

    Arabic interfaces

Right-to-left layouts and Arabic input can expose unusual validation and display bugs.

Ports and logistics operatorApplication penetration test

Web, API and mobile testing for a logistics platform

A customer-facing platform was about to launch and needed independent assurance.

  • Manual testing against the OWASP standards
  • Business-logic and authorisation testing
  • Retest to confirm fixes

Result: Critical issues fixed before launch and developers trained on the patterns found.

Tier-1 Saudi bankRed team exercise

A threat-led red team exercise for a bank

The bank needed evidence that its people, processes and detection would hold up against a realistic attacker, in line with SAMA expectations.

  • Agreed rules of engagement and a threat scenario with the CISO
  • Ran a controlled exercise against production systems
  • Ran a purple team workshop so defenders could see every step

Result: Detection gaps were fixed, playbooks were updated and the board received a plain-language report.

National energy operatorOT security assessment

OT assessment and segmentation for an energy operator

Plant networks had grown without a clear map, and remote access for vendors was a concern.

  • Passive discovery of OT assets without touching production
  • Purdue-model segmentation design and industrial firewall rules
  • Secure remote access for vendors with session recording

Result: A mapped, segmented network with a prioritised remediation plan the plant team could schedule.

10Questions answered

Mobile Application Testing FAQs

What is OWASP MASVS?

The Mobile Application Security Verification Standard is a set of security requirements for mobile apps, in levels from standard security to resilience against reverse engineering. It gives testers and developers a shared checklist.

Do you test both iOS and Android?

Yes. We test both platforms on real devices, as each has different storage, keychain and permission models.

Do you test the backend API too?

Yes. Most serious mobile flaws are in the API, so we test it alongside the app.

Do you need our source code?

No. We can test the compiled app. Source code review adds depth for critical apps.

How long does a mobile app test take?

Usually one to two weeks per platform, depending on size and the number of integrations.

Can you test our banking or payment app?

Yes. We include resilience testing, secure storage and transaction-signing checks for apps with financial risk.

Is root or jailbreak detection enough?

No. Detection is one layer that attackers routinely bypass. We assess it alongside server-side controls and runtime protections.
