OT network security in Saudi Arabia: segment the plant, control the conduits

We redesign operational networks into zones with controlled conduits, build an industrial DMZ between IT and OT, secure vendor remote access and monitor traffic passively, so one compromised system cannot take down the plant.

  • Zones and conduits designed to IEC 62443
  • Industrial DMZ between IT and OT

01Overview

What is OT network segmentation?

OT network segmentation divides an industrial network into zones, groups of assets with similar security needs, and controls the conduits between them with firewalls and rules, so that a problem in one area, or an attacker from the business network, cannot spread to the systems that run the process.

Many plants still run flat networks, where a laptop connected to a switch can reach every controller. Segmentation is the single most effective improvement most plants can make.

The design must respect real-time traffic, legacy protocols and safety, which is why we plan it with operations and implement it in stages.

02What we do

Six parts of an OT network programme

From design to monitoring.

Zone and conduit design

Group assets by function and risk, define allowed flows and set target security levels.

  • Asset and flow analysis
  • Zone definition
  • Conduit rules by protocol
  • Target security levels

You receive: A network design the plant team can approve.

Industrial DMZ

A controlled exchange layer between IT and OT.

Industrial firewalls

Firewalls that understand industrial protocols and commands.

Secure remote access

Vendor and engineer access without direct network exposure.

Passive monitoring

Detect new devices, abnormal commands and policy violations.

Validation and testing

Prove that the segmentation works.

03How we work

From flat network to zones, in stages

Segment in the order that reduces risk soonest.

06Saudi Arabia and the GCC

What Saudi frameworks say about OT networks

Segmentation is a recurring requirement.

  • NCA

    NCA OTCC

Network segmentation, secure remote access and monitoring are expected for critical OT, with stronger controls for more critical facilities.

  • NCA

    NCA CSCC

Critical systems need isolation and restricted access.

  • Supply chain

    Third-party access

Vendor and contractor access is a focus of audits and incidents.

National energy operatorOT security assessment

OT assessment and segmentation for an energy operator

Plant networks had grown without a clear map, and remote access for vendors was a concern.

  • Passive discovery of OT assets without touching production
  • Purdue-model segmentation design and industrial firewall rules
  • Secure remote access for vendors with session recording

Result: A mapped, segmented network with a prioritised remediation plan the plant team could schedule.

Industrial manufacturerIoT security review

Security review of a connected-device platform

A manufacturer was rolling out connected devices and needed to know the design was safe.

  • Threat model of device, gateway and cloud
  • Firmware and protocol testing
  • Secure update and identity design

Result: Design changes made before mass rollout.

Tier-1 Saudi bankRed team exercise

A threat-led red team exercise for a bank

The bank needed evidence that its people, processes and detection would hold up against a realistic attacker, in line with SAMA expectations.

  • Agreed rules of engagement and a threat scenario with the CISO
  • Ran a controlled exercise against production systems
  • Ran a purple team workshop so defenders could see every step

Result: Detection gaps were fixed, playbooks were updated and the board received a plain-language report.

10Questions answered

OT Network Security FAQs

What are zones and conduits?

In IEC 62443, a zone is a group of assets with similar security requirements, and a conduit is the controlled communication path between zones.

What is an industrial DMZ?

A buffer network between IT and OT where data is exchanged through controlled services, so business systems never connect directly to the plant.

Will segmentation disrupt production?

It can if done carelessly. We plan with operations, start with monitoring, pilot in one area and implement in agreed windows.

Do we need industrial firewalls?

They are useful where protocol inspection or ruggedised hardware is needed, and standard firewalls may suffice elsewhere.

How do you secure vendor remote access?

Through brokered sessions with MFA, approval, time limits and recording, rather than permanent VPN access.

Can you monitor OT traffic without installing agents?

Yes. Passive sensors on mirror ports observe traffic and detect anomalies without touching controllers.
