01Overview

What is ISO 27001?

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system (ISMS). It requires an organisation to assess its security risks, choose and implement controls, monitor and improve them, and be audited by an accredited certification body, which then issues a certificate valid for three years with annual surveillance audits.

The 2022 edition reorganised Annex A into 93 controls across four themes: organisational (37), people (8), physical (14) and technological (34). Organisations certified to the 2013 edition had until 31 October 2025 to transition, so new certificates are issued against the 2022 edition.

Certification is increasingly asked for by customers and tenders in Saudi Arabia and the GCC, and the ISMS also underpins compliance with the NCA ECC and other frameworks.

Fintech and payments providerSOC 2 readiness

SOC 2 Type II readiness for a payments provider

Enterprise customers were asking for a SOC 2 report the company did not yet have.

  • Scoped the trust services criteria with the auditor
  • Closed control gaps and automated evidence collection
  • Supported the audit through the observation period

Result: The audit completed with the report customers had asked for.

Insurance companyISO 27001 certification

ISO 27001 certification for an insurer

The insurer needed certified information security management to win larger corporate accounts.

  • Risk assessment and Statement of Applicability
  • Policies, training and internal audit
  • Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit support

Result: Certification achieved first time, with an ISMS the team now runs itself.

Tier-1 Saudi bankRed team exercise

A threat-led red team exercise for a bank

The bank needed evidence that its people, processes and detection would hold up against a realistic attacker, in line with SAMA expectations.

  • Agreed rules of engagement and a threat scenario with the CISO
  • Ran a controlled exercise against production systems
  • Ran a purple team workshop so defenders could see every step

Result: Detection gaps were fixed, playbooks were updated and the board received a plain-language report.

10Questions answered

ISO 27001 FAQs

How long does ISO 27001 certification take?

Typically six to twelve months for a mid-size organisation, depending on starting maturity and scope.

Do you issue the ISO 27001 certificate?

No. Certificates are issued by independent accredited certification bodies. We prepare you and support the audits.

What changed in ISO 27001:2022?

Annex A was reduced from 114 controls in 14 domains to 93 controls in four themes, with 11 new controls. The transition period for 2013 certificates ended on 31 October 2025.

What is the Statement of Applicability?

A document listing every Annex A control, whether it applies, why, and its implementation status. It is a core audit artefact.

How much does ISO 27001 cost?

It depends on scope and size: consulting effort, tools and the certification body's audit fees. We provide a fixed-scope estimate for our part.

Do we need to do anything after certification?

Yes. The ISMS must keep operating, with annual surveillance audits and recertification every three years.

Can ISO 27001 help with the NCA ECC?

Yes. They overlap substantially, and an ISMS gives you the governance and evidence base for ECC compliance.
