IoT security in Saudi Arabia: secure the device, the gateway and the platform behind them

We design and test connected products and deployments end to end: device hardware and firmware, wireless and network protocols, gateways, cloud services and the APIs and apps that control them.

01Overview

What is IoT security?

IoT security protects connected devices such as sensors, meters, cameras and controllers, the networks and gateways that link them, and the cloud platforms and apps that manage them. It covers secure design, identity, firmware integrity, encrypted communication, updates and monitoring across the device's whole life.

IoT devices are often small, cheap and deployed in places nobody visits again. If they ship with default passwords or cannot be updated, they become permanent holes in the network.

We help manufacturers build products securely and help operators assess and protect the devices they deploy, in smart cities, buildings, utilities and industry.

06Saudi Arabia and the GCC

IoT in the Kingdom's smart-city and industrial programmes

Large rollouts raise the bar for security.

  • CST

    CST IoT regulation

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission regulates IoT services and device approval. We help you meet security expectations during type approval and deployment.

  • Programmes

    Smart city and utility programmes

Meters, sensors and cameras at scale need identity, update and monitoring plans from day one.

  • PDPL

    PDPL for personal data

Devices that collect personal data, such as cameras and wearables, must follow data protection duties.

  • NCA

    Critical infrastructure

IoT in critical environments falls under OTCC and CSCC.

Industrial manufacturerIoT security review

Security review of a connected-device platform

A manufacturer was rolling out connected devices and needed to know the design was safe.

  • Threat model of device, gateway and cloud
  • Firmware and protocol testing
  • Secure update and identity design

Result: Design changes made before mass rollout.

Tier-1 Saudi bankRed team exercise

A threat-led red team exercise for a bank

The bank needed evidence that its people, processes and detection would hold up against a realistic attacker, in line with SAMA expectations.

  • Agreed rules of engagement and a threat scenario with the CISO
  • Ran a controlled exercise against production systems
  • Ran a purple team workshop so defenders could see every step

Result: Detection gaps were fixed, playbooks were updated and the board received a plain-language report.

National energy operatorOT security assessment

OT assessment and segmentation for an energy operator

Plant networks had grown without a clear map, and remote access for vendors was a concern.

  • Passive discovery of OT assets without touching production
  • Purdue-model segmentation design and industrial firewall rules
  • Secure remote access for vendors with session recording

Result: A mapped, segmented network with a prioritised remediation plan the plant team could schedule.

10Questions answered

IoT Security FAQs

What is ETSI EN 303 645?

A European standard for consumer IoT security setting baseline requirements such as unique passwords, update mechanisms and vulnerability reporting. It is widely used as a baseline for other IoT products too.

Do you test hardware and firmware?

Yes. We test debug interfaces, storage, firmware and secure boot, in addition to wireless and cloud components.

Can you help us design a secure product?

Yes. We threat-model early, recommend architecture, identity and update design, and test prototypes before release.

Do you test the cloud platform and mobile app too?

Yes. Most IoT attacks go through the platform, API or app, so we test the whole chain.

How long does an IoT assessment take?

Typically four to eight weeks, depending on the number of components and depth.

Can you assess a deployment rather than a product?

Yes. For operators we assess deployed devices, gateways, network segmentation and monitoring.
